The Unthinkable is Driving Me Up the Wall
My family now lives in an Enemy Empire
I could never have imagined thinking of the USA as an enemy.
But because Trump has taken dictatorial power I can’t separate him from the US as a whole: he has destroyed civil liberties, broken World Trade Organisation rules, (Trump’s 2025 tariffs are illegal, and the WTO could have kicked the US out of the WTO, but like everyone else, they are too scared to challenge him and suffer his disfavour), and is likely to renege on Nato agreements, or pull out of Nato altogether.
If Trump is my enemy, then the United States is my enemy.
Half my family is from the US, and more than half lives there. Of course they are not my enemies. But the non-US half of my family is too scared to visit the US anymore. It is enemy territory.
I’m having trouble getting my head around this. There is nothing I can do and nothing my US family members or friends can do. There is nothing anyone can do, Trump is in power. End of story.
What is going on is a destruction of the personal ties between us ordinary people. What we think or say makes not a jot of difference.
